bethel: A Place where heaven and earth meet

“HOW AWESOME IS THIS PLACE! THIS IS NONE OTHER THAN THE HOUSE OF GOD; THIS IS THE GATE OF HEAVEN.” - GENESIS 28:17, NIV

Key Passage: Genesis 28:10-22

For Reflection: How does the image of a gateway between heaven and earth shape your perception of the Church? How is this reflected in your daily walk with God?

When Jacob encountered God in his dream, he hardly expected that the God of his forefathers would make a covenant with him so grand that it would impact his descendants for generations to come.

At this point in time, Jacob was on the run from his brother Esau, who was planning to kill him. We can only imagine the kinds of thoughts and emotions Jacob may have been experiencing as a result—fear, isolation, uncertainty. Perhaps even guilt.

Even though Jacob was not seeking God at this time, God still showed up in the midst of all the gravity and turmoil of Jacob’s situation. The words spoken by God to Jacob in the dream were promises that brought solutions to all the doubts that remain unvoiced in the biblical account. In leaving his home, Jacob was probably feeling the loss of his family, but God promised him descendants “as numerous as the dust of the earth.” God spoke to his fear and promised him protection. God spoke to his doubt and promised provision. And He spoke to Jacob’s loneliness and promised companionship.

The lesson is clear: God is seeking us. From the beginning of time, He has always been the one who invites, reveals, promises and sustains. All we have to do is respond with an obedient heart and open hands. When we accept His invitation of relationship, not only does He go with us into what we perceive to be uncharted territory but we get to be part of God’s House—living in the reality of a gateway between heaven and earth.
