LEGACY: A Generational Echo - Steve Clark

The legacy we can pass to our children and grandchildren is one of living a life of faith, hope and love…

This blog is based on some reflections on the legacy I have inherited, honouring my parents and grandparents and the lives they have lived and considering what Scripture says on this.

This is my 103-year-old granddad. As a horticulturist, he spent his life (ages 24-86) along with my grandmother as a missionary in Papua New Guinea. They lived a life for others developing farming practices, creating schools, providing education and teaching God’s ways.

And these are my parents. They met in Papua New Guinea when my Dad was there serving with his building skills. They served in PNG for a number of years, later taking Bibles into China and then helping refugees on the border of Burma (Myanmar). They then helping renovate mercy ships in the US and in recent years being planted in their local church and serving through community ministries.

A few verses I have pondered on:

  • 2 Timothy 1:5:  I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

  • Proverbs 17:6:  Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.

  • Proverbs 13:22:  A good and righteous man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.  And the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.

  • 1 Corinthians 13:13: And now these three remain (will last for ever): faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

The legacy we can pass to our children and grandchildren is one of living a life of faith, hope and love, especially work done in love.  Living an example of loving God and loving people is a legacy for our kids and their kids.  Passing on this spiritual inheritance is one of the greatest things we can do – it sets our children and grandchildren up for an eternal reward.  This will be credited to us as a crown and bring pride to our kids.

Although creating a material inheritance is goal worthy, let’s not just think about passing a physical inheritance to our grandkids; God can transfer the natural wealth of the wicked to the righteous… in an instant. Let’s live with an eternal perspective to legacy and inheritance.

The spiritual legacy I have inherited is one of walking by faith, hope and love. It is one of walking in the Spirit: not by sight, not by might, not by strength but in step with the Holy Spirit.  It is one of hearing and obeying, of seeking first the Kingdom of God. I am proud of my parents and grandparents and hope to live a life of faith, hope and love too, securing a crown of my own – passing this legacy to my grandies.
