Legacy Devotional: Day 12
The Church: A Place of Belonging
Can you imagine what the world would look like if we welcomed each other with open arms? If we were to embrace the uniqueness of every individual person without judgement, without condemnation, flaws and all?
Acts 2:41-47 gives us a beautiful picture of what the early Church was like. These were new believers; many of them had been converted on the day of Pentecost and originally came from distant nations (Acts 2). There must have been a multitude of languages and many cultural differences amongst the thousands of believers, yet Luke writes that they all met together constantly and enjoyed it, sharing everything they had. What an amazing revelation of what the Church could be: not just united under the banner of Jesus but living out this unity by meeting, eating, singing, praying, laughing and dancing together. What a sight this would be to behold!
In Mark 12:30-31, God makes it clear that it is our responsibility as members of the Church both to love God with all of our hearts and love people. The Church is the answer to a hurting and broken world. We have been called to genuinely love people—to accept them and welcome them, to walk alongside them in their darkest moments as well as in their happiest times, to share our lives with them, and to praise God alongside them.
Even as we enjoy the sense of belonging we experience in our relationship with God, let’s continue to welcome others into His House and into relationship with Him!
